The biggest problem in using vehicles that run on fossil fuels is that they are very costly due to the high prices of petroleum and diesel. In addition to that, due to the increasing traffic conditions in Sri Lanka the pollution levels keep increasing. With the 2018 budget proposal stating that majority of cars running on petrol and diesel will rise in price, the ideal option would be to switch to using electric cars.
The government has imposed a super luxury tax on vehicles based on their engine capacity. Vehicles with an engine capacity over 2500cc will be taxed. The prices of electric cars have reduced in price, encouraging people to purchase them.
Purchasing a Nissan Leaf or any Tesla model would not only help you save money, but also helps you to maintain a healthy and clean environment. Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera stated that there will be a reduction in taxes on the Nissan Leaf, Suzuki Wagon R and the Toyota Vitz.
By reducing the price of electric vehicles the government expects the entire country to be running on non-fossil fuels by the year 2040. They also expect all government vehicles to be converted to hybrid or electric by the year 2025.

Tesla was founded in 2003. It is an American Electric car manufacturer. Apart from manufacturing cars, they also manufacture solar panels, solar roof tiles and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Their latest announcement was their newest electric car, the Tesla Model 3 which raised their global sales to over 250,000 units. In 2016 the Model S exceeded 50,000 sales, which was the most for a plug in car for the second year running.
With the number of cars increasing daily, the consumption of petrol and diesel also increases causing poisonous fumes that harm the environment. Due to this reason, Tesla started manufacturing cars that run without the usage of any sort of fossil fuels. In 2008 Tesla got widespread attention when they released the Tesla Roadster into the market. They had produced a car that can run 244 miles in a single charge, using its lithium-ion battery.

With the 2018 budget proposal stating that majority of cars running on petrol and diesel will rise in price, the ideal option would be to switch to using electric cars. While the prices of luxury cars have gone up by Rs. 2.5 million, the prices of electric cars have reduced in price, encouraging people to purchase them.
Advantages of switching to Tesla electric cars
- Superior battery capacity
You don’t have to charge the batteries often as they are built to last for days per charge. A vehicles battery running out is one of its biggest perceived drawbacks. It isn’t the case with Tesla as their Model S is able charge at around 31 miles per hour, meaning a full charge would take just 9 hours.
- Increased vehicle autonomy
Tesla helps give vehicle more autonomy. It has 8 surrounding camera’s in the car which can see up to 250 meters of range. It has 12 ultrasonic detectors that help detect objects that are within a specific distance of the car.
- Autopilot feature
The new Tesla cars will come with the feature of autopilot. Autopilot will ensure the car matches the speed of traffic conditions, stick to a certain lane and change lanes when necessary. This will ensure that the driver’s involvement is minimized.
- Extra storage space
Due to not having an engine that takes up a large amount of space, the Tesla Model S comes with a trunk in the front. For anyone looking for a car with sufficient storage space this would be the ideal option.
As we can see the 2018 budget proposal has made changes in prices of cars in Sri Lanka, thereby making Electric cars such as the Tesla Model S affordable to the working class people. Due to these reasons the government should import more electric cars and invest sufficiently on building Electric vehicle charging stations so that people could easily switch to electric cars.
